Skin Cancer Awareness, SPF & Early Detection: Why It Matters More Than Ever
SKCIN
(www.skcin.org) Raising awareness through Education, Promoting Prevention & Early Detection.
MASCED = Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection.
MASCED.UK is a national accreditation programme for health professionals and hair, beauty industry professionals to promote the prevention and early detection of skin cancer, improve diagnosis and save lives.
Why This Matters
Most skin cancers are linked to overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from:
The sun
Sunbeds
Damage from UV exposure is:
Cumulative (builds over time)
Permanent
Often invisible at first
Which is why early detection is absolutely key
MASCED Training: What It Means for You
I’ve completed MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) training through SKCIN.
This programme is designed to:
Raise awareness
Promote prevention
Support early identification of potential skin cancers
It’s important to be clear:
I do not diagnose skin cancer.
I am trained to spot potential concerns early and guide you on what to do next.
A Unique Opportunity at Your Appointment
One of the advantages I have as a dental hygienist is that I see you regularly—and often when you feel well.
This creates a powerful opportunity for:
Early observation
Preventative care
Subtle changes being noticed over time
At OHH:
Skin checks (visual awareness) are included
Oral cancer screening is included
There is no additional cost alongside your appointment
If something doesn’t look quite right:
I can take photos with ‘SKCIN’ skin measurement rulers, for you to take or email to your GP
If In Doubt, Get It Checked Out
Most of what I see will be completely harmless.
But if even one concern is caught early, it can make a life-changing difference.
A Personal Reflection
I’ll be honest—I wasn’t always careful.
I’m a pale, Scottish sun-lover who:
Chased the tan
Had more than a few bad sunburns
Used sunbeds regularly in my younger years
Looking back… not my finest decisions.
Over time, I noticed:
Uneven tanning
Increased freckling
Skin changes
And with more education (and age comes wisdom!), my mindset completely shifted.
SPF Is Your BFF
If there’s one product I recommend above all others:
👉 SPF. Every. Single. Day.
UV rays:
Penetrate even on cloudy days
Are present all year round
Contribute to premature ageing AND skin cancer
SPF helps:
Protect against UV damage
Reduce signs of ageing
Support long-term skin health
Chemical vs Mineral SPF: What’s the Difference?
Chemical SPF
Absorbs UV rays and converts them into heat.
Pros:
Easy to apply
No white residue
Long-lasting
Cons:
May irritate sensitive skin
Can worsen conditions like rosacea or melasma
Mineral (Physical) SPF
Sits on the skin and reflects UV rays.
Pros:
Gentle on sensitive skin
Works immediately
Often preferred for long-term use
Cons:
Thicker texture
Can leave a white cast
Needs more frequent reapplication
Which SPF Should You Choose?
👉 Ideally: Broad-spectrum SPF (UVA + UVB protection)
If possible:
Choose mineral for daily use
But honestly… the best SPF is the one you will actually use consistently
